Harold’s special brand of leadership and professionalism has made Helmkampf Construction one of the most respected general contractors in the area.
A St. Louis native, Harold graduated from Washington University with a degree in business, and then went on to serve in the Army. He learned the construction business by working as a project manager on several residential and commercial projects. Recognizing an opportunity for a small, service-oriented company to specialize in commercial and industrial construction, he started the business in 1960.
As the company’s reputation for high quality, cost-efficient building grew, Harold wanted to give something back to the community that helped his business prosper. As a result, he has worked on behalf of a wide variety of community and educational organizations.

Tom Helmkampf, President
Early on, Tom gained experience in the construction business. During summer vacations, he worked in the field as a construction laborer and learned every facet of the day-to-day operations as a project assistant in the office.
After receiving his undergraduate degree from Denison University, Tom earned a master’s degree in business administration at Vanderbilt University to hone his business skills. He then used his management expertise and construction background in Atlanta as a property manager for 1,500 low-income, multi-family apartment units.
In 1991, Tom joined Helmkampf Construction. After a number of years as project manager and vice president, Tom stepped into the role of president. He learned from his father the value of contributing to the St. Louis community and also shares his knowledge and experience with many local nonprofit groups.
